One of the biggest reasons that singers choose to work with me is because they want to know how to be a confident singer. Totally get it!
You want to feel:
Proud and confident of your voice.
Like you are in total control of your singing and your voice comes out the way that you want.
How To Be A Confident Singer: Brain Triggers
A trigger is any circumstance that happens that “triggers” a thought. Then thoughts trigger your actions which trigger consequences.
Triggers can be:
Emotional
Mental
Environmental
Social
Most of the triggers that create the thoughts that prevent you from becoming a confident singer are emotional and mental.
How To Be A Confident Singer: What Most Singers Do
Here’s an example of something that might happen if you are not training with a vocal coach, not following a program, or trying to do it yourself.
Trigger = Let’s pretend that you are singing a song and you sing a high note and it cracks
Thought = I am a horrible singer...or I’ll never get this right
Action = You stop practicing, and get frustrated.
Consequence = You give up on your singing dream.
How To Be A Confident Singer: What Confident Singers Do
NOW - if you are training, working with a vocal coach, or have a step-by-step program that you are following, this can look a LOT different. How to become a confident singer is all about the thoughts that you have AND hearing your singing getting better.
Here’s the same example from a singer who has a little bit of guidance and has been training for a little while:
Same Trigger as before = Let’s pretend that you are singing a song and you sing a high note and it cracks
Thought = That didn’t come out the way that I wanted it to. Why?
Notice that instead of judging yourself - NOW we are thinking more scientifically and asking better questions! You are going to gain this knowledge by getting background information from your vocal coach, your training, or a a step-by-step program like The Star Singer Green Room. If you don’t have any guidance or background knowledge, it might be very difficult to do this since we don’t have any experience on singing higher notes.
But if you are working on higher notes, for example, there are only a few reasons why your high notes don’t come out the way that you want and the primary reasons are:
Not enough space
Not enough airflow
This knowledge affects your thoughts, your action, AND the consequence!
Thought = That didn’t come out the way that I wanted it to. Why? ….well I know that most of the time, the only reason why my high notes don’t come out the way that I want is because I don’t have enough space or I don’t have enough airflow.
Action - Try the song again - but this time thinking about “having enough space” as you approach the high note.
Consequence - the high note sounds A LOT better this time!
Instead of judging yourself, you can come at it from a scientific/objective point of view - which is going to make a BIG difference in the long run! It’s the difference between giving up on your dreams and getting frustrated vs. improving your singing.
How To Be A Confident Singer: Action Steps
We can train ourselves to have better thoughts - but that can take some time.
It’s a LOT easier to change the action so that our body and brain KNOW that it’s something that we can repeat automatically.
Here are your next action steps:
